CURRICULUM - 2nd GRADE

Language Arts
The
goal of the second grade language arts program is to help
all students develop skills that will lead to successful
reading and comprehension at grade level, to develop legible
penmanship, and to use reading, writing, and speaking as
effective communication tools.
Reading Notes
Reading is taught in 3 ways:
1.
Strong Phonetic Knowledge – Students will be
taught
sounds of the letters and letter
combinations, and to blend these sounds to form
words.
2.
Essential Sight Word Development – Not all words
are
decodable phonetically, therefore, students
will need
to memorize the most frequently used
sight
words.
3.
Literature-based Strategies – Thematic units will
allow
students to explore language arts skills as
they read
and write daily.
Writing & Handwriting Notes
Students will use the D’Nealian handwriting model and will
learn the lower-case cursive letters beginning the second
nine weeks. Individual differences are respected as the
student is encouraged to use consistent size and spacing of
letters. Legibility is the goal! Students will continue
written composition skills by writing sentences, paragraphs,
and stories. Second graders will be expected to spell
commonly used words correctly, but will sometimes use
inventive spelling as they work through the writing process,
which includes learning prewriting strategies, creating a
rough draft, editing, revising, and publishing.
Spelling Notes
Spelling words will be assigned weekly. Words will
reinforce the phonics skill presented in each unit. Weekly
tests will consist of fifteen list words and two dictated
sentences containing commonly used second grade words and
previous spelling words.

Math
Second grade math is based on the six academic content
standards adopted by the State Board of Education. These
content standards are:
1.
number, number sense, and operations
2.
measurement
3.
geometry and spatial sense
4.
patterns, functions, and algebra
5.
data analysis and probability
6.
process standard: mathematical processes
Students
will be taught new skills in a large group, and then will
have time to practice the skill independently. When work is
completed and checked by the teacher or paraprofessional,
students will then work in small groups to practice math
skills contained in the content standards.
Daily practice of math facts is encouraged at home.
Students will need to be prepared to take addition and
subtraction timed-tests weekly.

Science
The
second grade science program allows students to think
creatively and explore freely using hands-on methods. Major
units of study include:
1.
energy
2.
plants and animals
3.
weather
4.
inventors
5.
solar system
In
health, students will develop values, build critical
thinking skills, and promote behaviors that relate to health
goals.

Social Studies
Major units taught in second grade social studies
include:
1.
citizenship
2.
government
3.
people in societies (Mexico, Japan, Kenya, &
Christmas
traditions)
4.
