established by the
Ohio
Board of Education.

1. Phonemic awareness, word recognition, & fluency
2. Acquisition of vocabulary
3. Reading process: Concepts of print, comprehension
strategies, & self-monitoring strategies

Math
The mathematics program
gives students opportunities to experience basic number
concepts through informal group activities and planned
experiences which occur in games and discovery as students
work with materials. This includes rote counting,
recognizing and understanding the meaning of the numerals
from zero to twenty, learning about comparisons, the
calendar, sets, one-to-one correspondences, geometric
shapes, patterning, graphing, and problem solving
activities.
The mathematical curriculum is broken down into these five
standards:
1. number, number sense, and operations
2.
measurement
3.
geometry and spatial sense
4.
patterns, functions, and algebra
5.
data analysis and probability

Science
Kindergarten provides students with the opportunity to
develop the scientific skills of wondering, questioning,
investigating and communicating to enable them to begin to
develop a sense of the world. Kindergartners learn through
discovery about changes on Earth, in the sky, plants,
animals, their habitats and non-living things in their local
community. Through hands-on exploration, students learn the
characteristics of objects, tools, materials, how they move,
and whether or not they are natural or man-made. Students
explore the different ways people learn about science and
interact with living things and the environment to promote
respect for nature. To complete this year, students show
knowledge of scientific concepts through demonstration of
verbal and non-verbal skills and activities.

Social Studies
A Child's Place in Time and Space
The kindergarten year is a time for getting
acquainted with the school setting and routines. Students
begin to understand the importance of rules, responsibility
and decision-making. They are introduced to the cultural
heritage of the
United
States and democratic principles through the study of
national symbols and holidays. They also learn about other
cultures so that they can begin to form concepts about
the world beyond their own classroom and community.
