CURRICULUM - PRE-SCHOOL
The
main focus of the preschool curriculum is acquisition of
social and school readiness skills. Our goal is also to
foster a love of learning and create a positive first school
experience. We work on following: simple rules, sharing,
turn taking, and working cooperatively. Each day the
children make choices and take responsibility for different
jobs in the room. We encourage them to care for their own
belongings and build a sense of community by encouraging
cooperation on projects and tasks. By giving the children
choices and responsibility they learn to care for their
classroom and see the results of the choices they make. We
plan activities to foster math, language and literacy,
self-help and social skills.
We provide a variety of developmentally
appropriate activities to meet the needs of various learning
styles. Through a balance of active and quiet times we
structure our day to reinforce the skills we introduce.
Math
In Math we focus on rote counting, one-to-one
correspondence, number identification to ten and basic shape
identification. We work on patterning, relationships
(shorter, taller), measurement, and estimation. In all
areas we present problems and help the children with problem
solving skills.
Language
In the language and literacy area we use a
variety of literature to introduce skills. We use poetry,
picture and storybooks, songs, finger plays, and nursery
rhymes. We act out stories, illustrate books, and write our
own stories. We expose the children to letter recognition,
rhyming, and letter sound relationships. We work on first
name recognition and printing.
