CURRICULUM - 3rd GRADE
Language Arts
The goal of the third grade language arts program is to
build a love of independent reading.
Emphasis is placed on reading to learn. Strategies
such as phonetic and decoding skills, context clues,
vocabulary development, & comprehension skills help promote
reading growth. Students are encouraged to take active
responsibility for their own learning. Silent reading
is also emphasized though daily sustained silent reading
with a book of the student's choice, and teacher-directed
silent reading in textbooks and novels.
Mathematics
The focus of the math skills taught is based on the six academic
content standards adopted by the State Board of Education.
Content
Standards:
1. Number, number sense, & operations
2. Measurement
3. Geometry and spatial sense
4. Patterns, functions, and algebra
5. Data analysis and probability
6. Process standard: Mathematical processes
Health
The health program provides students with the opportunity to learn
about personal, physical, and mental health. Students study
community and consumer health, and careers in health and related
fields that contribute to the development of our students growing up
healthy and safe.
Social Studies
The focus of the second year program is people and their
relationships with groups. Students examine various groups
with emphasis on American heritage, democratic process, citizenship,
decision-making, resources, and world interactions.
Science
The third year science program allows students to think creatively
and explore freely using hands-on science methods. Students
are encouraged to hypothesize and then test their guesses through
experimentation. Major units include: rocks, soil, fossils;
life cycles; and forces and motion.
