CURRICULUM - 4th GRADE
Language Arts
The goals of the reading program are to increase vocabulary,
develop comprehension, decoding, and reference skills, as
well as to promote the appreciation of literature. Students
read a variety of fictional and informational selections in
the anthology, Emerald Forest, trade books, and other
resources. Reading progress is assessed through daily
performance and achievement on reading tests according to
grade level expectation. Students apply the writing
process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and
publishing) to produce a variety of informational and
creative compositions. The fourth grade program emphasizes
writing summaries, retellings, and personal style, and
presentation. At this grade grade level, expectations
include expanding topics with details, applying grammar and
mechanics rules practiced through a regular language
exercise, and spelling grade level words
correctly.
Students participate in listening activities on a daily
basis. They are expected to engage in active listening
which requires attention and participation.
A variety of formal and informal speaking opportunities are
practiced daily. Students should demonstrate appropriate
presentation qualities (posture, enunciation, projection,
etc.).
Social Studies
The major focus in fourth grade is the study of Ohio. The
six strands of Social Studies are incorporated into the
units of study throughout the year. The strands are:
American Heritage, People in Societies, World Interactions,
Decision Making & resources, Democratic Processes, and
Citizenship Rights & Responsibilities. Our study includes
the relationship of Ohio to the rest of the U.S., as well as
its interdependence in our global society.
Mathematics
The six standards that follow represent the mathematics
content and processes all students should know and be able
to use as they progress through school. These include:
Content Standards:
1. Number, number sense, and operations
2. Measurement
3. Geometry and spatial sense
4. Patterns, functions and algebra
5. Data Analysis and probability
Process Standard: Mathematical Processes.
Science/Health
The goal of the science program is to encourage students to
use higher level thinking skills while discovering the world
around them. They will be focusing on six topics: Animal
survival & Endangered Animals (Life Science), Machines &
Technology (Physical Science), and Water & Ecology (Earth
Science). The new course of study has allowed for many
hands-on activities and projects to enhance
learning.
Health studies will focus on a nutrition unit. This
involves a rat project that also concentrates on many of the
process skills. |
