Language Arts
The goals of the reading program are to increase vocabulary,
develop comprehension, decoding, and reference skills, as well
as to promote the appreciation of literature. Students
read a variety of fictional and informational selections in the
basal anthology, Out of This World. Reading progress is
assessed through daily performance and achievement on unit
reading tests according to grade level expectation.
Students apply the writing process (prewriting, drafting,
revising, editing, and publishing) to produce a variety of
informational and creative compositions. The fifth grade
program emphasizes writing summaries, and retellings, as well as
personal style, and presentation.
At this grade level,
expectations include expanding topics with details, applying
grammar and mechanics rules practiced through a regular language
exercise, and spelling grade level words correctly.
Students participate in listening activities on a daily basis.
They are expected to engage in active listening which requires
attention and participation.
A variety of formal and informal speaking opportunities are
practiced daily. Students should demonstrate appropriate
presentation qualities (posture, enunciation, projection, etc.).
Mathematics
The focus of the
math skills taught is based on the five strands designed by the NCTM
(National Council of Teachers of Mathematics).

Social
Studies
Fifth grade Social Studies is a study of world communities.
Students study maps, customs from other countries, where
countries are located, and how other countries tie into the
United States. This subject prepares students for sixth
grade World History.
Science
Students are encouraged to think creatively using the scientific
method to study earth, physical, and life sciences. Earth
science focuses on geology where students investigate the
earth's structure, weathering effects, and rocks & minerals.
Physical science includes the study of energy including
magnetism and electricity where students have the opportunity to
create currents and motors. The human body is the area of
study in life sciences; students learn about each of the body's
systems, their functions, and conditions that affect them.
"Hands-on" methods along with computers and audio-visual aids
are utilized to stimulate individual curiosity in the area of
science.
Health
Areas of focus in the health program include nutrition, alcohol,
tobacco, and other drugs, growth and development, disease
prevention and control, first aid, and mental & emotional
health.
